Confessions of a fabricologist

The jinxed quilt

8 years ago · 1 MIN READ

The fabric of this quilt was one of my favourites when I started ... It was a "charm pack" I bought in the United States when on holiday that I saved for just the right quilt.

I decided to make my then boyfriend a quilt as a gift for Christmas, so it needed to be masculine which was why I used browns to supplement the charm pack of batiks. Whilst working on the quilt my relationship had a major meltdown so I put the quilt to one side and gave him something else for Christmas (not as good or personal!).

Each of the 9 blocks were made up of the same 3 x 3 charm square pattern, however I alternated the use of the same brown fabric across the squares to provide variety and ensured each block used a different set of colours from the charm square pack.

In the new year with new hope I worked on it again and finished the quilt and gave it as a gift for our one year anniversary, to which I got no gift in return!

I never saw the quilt in use and when the relationship broke up in the summer, we did discuss me taking it back if he wasn't going to use it. In the end I decided he should keep it as it had been a gift and I didn't want it as a reminder.

This is the only quilt I wish I had never made, not because I dislike what I made as I love the fabrics and pattern but because it was made for the wrong person and the wrong reasons.
