Confessions of a fabricologist

For my brother

8 years ago · 1 MIN READ

This was first quilt made using a "Jelly Roll", which I had purchased over a year earlier in Texas, USA when on a shopping expedition with my dad! The quilt was made for my brother to replace his beloved Bargello quilt in blue, grey and brown that my mum had made him, which he had lost at University.

As well as being a first for using a Jelly Roll, it was also the first quilt I undertook to quilt as I went along, this meant that I made each block in its entirety by putting the backing material and wadding together and then stitched the Jelly Roll strips onto them. This resulted in me creating 25 blocks which were already quilted together and then just needed to be sewn together by bordering both sides of the block to the next block. This technique is great if you are unable to quilt large pieces on a sewing machine and enables you to build up the design on both sides of the quilt at the same time.

The Jelly Roll material had a batik feel to it so I decided to make it reversible with batik materials in solid squares. My brother has a penchant for grey so I was determined to use bright but manly colours on the quilt, so that it would brighten his room and he would use it!

The overall quilt is double bed sized and I note on trips to visit that it is used quite a bit!
